What is the Hawaii Island Economic Development Board?
The Hawaii Island Economic Development Board (HIEDB) is a private nonprofit corporation that specializes in implementing economic development projects. Organized in 1984, the mission statement says: To provide and promote private-sector support and expertise for balanced economic growth in Hawaii County, in partnership with federal, state, county and private resources.

Why should you become a member of HIEDB?
HIEDB’s mission of achieving balanced economic growth for Hawaii Island is designed to generate improved business activity leading to a better quality of life for all its residents. Quality membership is key to the success of any organization. Much of HIEDB’s success to date has been due to the support of its members. It is very important that the membership base be strengthened and expanded. Your support is needed.

What has HIEDB done?
During the past twenty five years, HIEDB has played a key role in many economic initiatives including development of University Park and the improved Ala Mauna, Saddle Road. It helped develop and manage the RETA-H program which provided loans and grants to agricultural entrepreneurs displaced by closed sugar companies. It has sponsored numerous workshops and conferences covering a wide range of economic development issues. It has recruited several new businesses to Hawaii County. HIEDB has educated, informed and updated citizens on a broad range of economic development issues and opportunities through its’ newspaper columns and radio shows.

What are the benefits to members?
Besides supporting the basic activities of HIEDB, members are provided with valuable information and contacts. HIEDB acts as a key liaison to government and private sector resources in financing, business planning, permitting and other business services. Through HIEDB’s website you will have the opportunity to share information about your business, network with other members and receive invitations to special conferences and workshops.

How does HIEDB function?
The Board of Directors meets every other month to review progress and set policy. General Membership meetings occur Quarterly and are rotated around Hawaii Island - all members are invited to participate. Standing committees include Science and Technology, Workforce Development and Membership. Participation in these committees is strongly encouraged.
